Fascinating Welling facts

Welling used to be a haven for highwaymen since much of the area was covered by thick woodland until clearing began in the 1800s. There is some speculation as to how Welling got its name; according to some, it derives from regularly comments back in the age of the horse-drawn carriage that once you crossed over the hill from London (Shooter’s Hill), you’d be ‘well in’ to the Kent area. However, others claim that Welling was so-called because of the Willing family who lived in the area in the 1300s. Perhaps more likely though, is that Welling was named after the spring at Welling corner, since Welwyn used to mean ‘place of the spring’.

Although founded in 1963, Welling United FC didn’t move to the Park View Road ground until 1977, when they took over from Bexley United. Before this, the club had played at a community sports ground over in Eltham. Some local Welling residents may remember, that in 2006 a severe storm damaged the floodlights and so all the floodlight pylons on one side of the ground were taken down. The did, of course, return to Welling United FC ground in 2007.
