Fascinating South Ockendon facts
South Ockendon is actually quite an ancient area. Prior to the Norman Conquest, it was a village which had its own priest from as early as 1085 AD. You can find South Ockendon mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Wocheduna” and its alleged that the area was named after a Saxon chief named ‘Wocca’, whose tribe, so it’s claimed, lived on a hill.
The ‘don’ part of South Ockendon goes back to the Old English terminology meaning ‘a low hill in open country.’
In modern times, just prior to the 1950s, the village of South Ockendon’s centre point was the village green’s Saxon church of St. Nicholas of Myra.
The nearby Royal Oak was originally a 14th-century tavern with an additional 17th-century northern extension. If you’re a local resident, you’ll notice that the north, south and western roads all converge on the green.
In more modern times as the population grew, the railway became an important feature of South Ockendon. It runs through Ockendon station and was actually built in 1892; it was a through-line that ran from Tilbury Docks all the way up to the Midlands. Romford and Upminster are now popular commuter routes to London, leading you right into the Capital City’s heart to Fenchurch Street when travelling via Barking.
