What we buy
The Ace Car Breakers Scrap Yard - Scrap Metal Dealers
Established in 1978, we’re a scrap metal merchant/dealer with a large scrap yard located in Swanscombe (near Dartford) Kent, not far from South East London and we specialise in the recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
We’re Environmental Agency approved and as such, hold an ATF and Waste Transfer License. We pride ourselves on our fast, friendly and reliable service as well as being able to give you a “best price” guarantee for your scrap metal.
What We Buy
We buy virtually any type of metal including iron, copper, lead, stainless steel and aluminium.
Each grade of metal is priced appropriately and regularly updated according to the scrap metal market database. We have a weighbridge at our scrap yard so that we can accurately weigh all loads per tonne or part thereof.
A fully-trained member of our team will be happy to inform you of the grade of metal you have and the price you can expect to get for it.

Local tradesmen
There are certain businesses that accumulate scrap metal on a daily basis. For example, if you’re a local plumber, you’ll no doubt need to get rid of certain metals on a weekly basis. Things like copper pipes and old radiators are a valuable scrap metal commodity so you’ll most likely not want to throw them in a typical household skip, which you’ll have to PAY to have removed.
It’s far better to bring all your scrap metal to us, where it can be sorted and weighed in order for us to PAY YOU instead. Alternatively, if you run a small business that has a regular stream of scrap metal (e.g. unused metal offcuts or shavings), we can deliver a scrap metal skip to your premises for free and then pay you when we take it away.

Complete Or Incomplete Vehicles
We’ll also happily pay for incomplete cars such as ones without an engine, catalytic converter or wheels – Once weighed, we’ll pay you per-tonne of metal for your vehicle.
Due to the constantly fluctuating price of scrap metal on the global market, this price can change.
Call us for more details on how to scrap your incomplete vehicle on 01322 363 383.
Alternatively, if you have a complete car, simply get a free quote today using our handy online instant price generator.
How Does Payment Work?
In order to scrap any metal with us, you’ll need to set up an account and we’ll need some personal information from you in order to do this. We’ll require some form of ID, such as a driving licence or passport and may also require proof of address.
There are various methods we can use to pay you for your scrap metal including cheque, bank transfer or an Incendia money card. However, due to legal restrictions, we’re not able to pay you in cash.
Bank transfer or cheque
Your bank details may be requested in order for us to make a payment or alternatively, we can give you a cheque. Bank transfers can often be paid the same day, typically between 3-4 pm.
Incendia money card
An Incendia money card is a form of debit card that’s linked to your account with us. We can transfer your money straight onto your Incendia card, ready for you to draw out instantly.

FAQs
General Scrap Metal Recycling Questions & Answers
What's the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals?
Ferrous Metal:
- Contain iron as a primary element.
- Magnetic properties: Most ferrous metals are magnetic.
- Prone to rust: Since they contain iron, they are susceptible to rust and corrosion when exposed to moisture (unless treated or alloyed).
- Examples: Steel, cast iron, and wrought iron.
Non-Ferrous Metal:
- Do not contain iron.
- Non-magnetic properties: These metals are generally non-magnetic.
- Corrosion resistance: Non-ferrous metals are usually more resistant to rust and corrosion.
- Examples: Aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, and lead.
In our industry (scrap and recycling), ferrous metals are typically heavier and more commonly used in construction, while non-ferrous metals are lighter, more malleable, and often used in applications where resistance to corrosion or electrical conductivity is important.
How much will your scrap yard pay me for my scrap metal?
The price we pay for your scrap metal can vary significantly depending on several factors:
- Type of metal: Different metals have different values. For example, non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminium, and brass generally fetch higher prices than ferrous metals like steel or iron.
- Quality and condition: Clean, sorted metal is worth more than mixed or contaminated materials. Metals that are free from paint, insulation, or other coatings will be valued higher.
- Purity: If the scrap is mixed with other metals or materials (such as plastic, rubber, or wood), this can lower its value because of the extra effort required to separate and recycle it.
- Weight: Heavier loads of scrap metal generally lead to a better payout, but the type of metal still plays a major role in determining the price per kilogram or tonne.
- Current market prices: Scrap metal prices fluctuate based on global supply and demand, so the price you receive could change from week to week. You can check current scrap metal prices for a rough idea.
- Location: Prices may vary depending on your location and whether we’re collecting the metal from you or whether you’re bringing it to us.
In order to get the best estimate, it’s a good idea to contact us with details about the type of metal you have, its condition. If you’re able to give us an idea of the quantity too, we’ll be happy to provide a more accurate quote based on the current market value.
What types of metal do you accept?
We accept a wide variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including but not limited to:
- Ferrous metals: Steel, iron, cast iron, and other metals containing iron. These metals are often found in household appliances, car parts, and construction materials.
- Non-ferrous metals: Copper, aluminium, brass, lead, and zinc. These metals are typically found in electrical wiring, plumbing pipes, gutters, and more.
- Car parts and scrap vehicles: We accept metal parts from cars, including engines, gearboxes, and batteries.
- Household scrap metal: Items such as old appliances, radiators, and metal furniture.
- Industrial and commercial scrap: We take industrial scrap, including metal from construction sites, factory clearances, and more.
If you’re unsure whether we accept a specific type of metal or item, feel free to contact us for clarification. We’ll be happy to help
Do you accept household scrap metal?
Yes, we accept household scrap metal. Common household items that we accept include:
- Old appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, but not fridges or fridge freezers.
- Metal furniture like bed frames, tables, and chairs.
- Radiators, boilers, and metal piping from home renovations.
- Metal kitchenware such as pots, pans, and cutlery.
- Bicycles, lawnmowers, and other metal garden tools.
If you’re clearing out your home or doing renovations, bringing your unwanted metal items to us is an easy way to recycle and earn some extra cash. If you’re unsure whether an item qualifies as household scrap, get in touch, and we’ll be happy to provide free advice.
Can I bring my scrap metal if it’s mixed with other materials?
Yes, you can bring scrap metal that’s mixed with other materials, but keep in mind that the price we offer will depend on the level of contamination. If the scrap metal is mixed with non-metal materials such as plastic, rubber, or wood, it may require additional processing, which can lower the overall value.
For the best price, it’s a good idea to separate your metal from other materials beforehand. Clean, pure metal will always be worth more than mixed or contaminated scrap. If you’re unsure about the condition of your metal or how to sort it, feel free to ask us for guidance, and we’ll help you get the best value.
What are your current scrap metal prices?
Scrap metal prices fluctuate regularly due to changes in the global market, supply and demand, and other economic factors. Because of this, the price we can offer for your scrap metal may vary from day to day.
To get an accurate and up-to-date price for your scrap, we recommend contacting us directly or visiting our yard if you’re local to the Swanscombe/Gravesend area. We’ll be happy to provide a quote based on the type, weight, and quality of the metal you have.
If you’d like to stay informed about general scrap metal pricing trends, you can check online resources like metal price trackers, but remember that these may not always reflect the exact prices we offer at our yard.
Do you offer a pickup service?
Yes, we offer both pickup services and skips for scrap metal. If you have a large quantity of scrap or bulky items, we can arrange to drop off a skip at your location. You can fill it with your scrap metal, and we’ll collect it once it’s ready.
We’ll pay you for all the metal you put in the skip, so this is an ideal option for larger clear-outs or industrial and factory scrap. The type and amount of metal, as well as your location, may affect pricing, so please contact us for more details and to schedule a skip drop-off or collection.
If you have smaller amounts of scrap metal, you’re always welcome to bring it directly to our yard during opening hours. We’ll pay you more if we don’t have to collect it!
Is there a minimum amount of scrap metal required for selling?
No, there isn’t a strict minimum amount of scrap metal required for selling at our yard. Whether you have a small load of household scrap or a large industrial clearance, we’re happy to buy your metal.
However, larger quantities of scrap metal may get you a better overall price, as some types of metals are priced by weight. For very small amounts, it’s worth noting that transportation costs might outweigh the value of the scrap, so we recommend bringing in larger loads if possible to maximise your return.
If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us with details about the amount and type of metal you have, and we’ll be happy to advise you.
Do I need to sort my metal before bringing it to your scrap yard?
Sorting your scrap metal before bringing it to our scrap yard isn’t required, but it’s highly recommended. If your metals are sorted by type (e.g., ferrous and non-ferrous) and free from contaminants like plastic or other materials, you’re more likely to receive a better price.
Mixed or unsorted scrap will typically fetch a lower price because it requires more processing to separate and clean. If you’re unsure how to sort your metals or what qualifies as clean scrap, feel free to ask us when you arrive or give us a call for additional free advice. So, by taking a bit of time to sort your metal beforehand, you can maximise the value of your scrap.
What documents or identification do I need to sell scrap metal? (ask Jim/Henry specifically about this one)
To comply with UK law, you’ll need to provide valid ID when selling your scrap metal. The most commonly accepted forms of ID are:
- A valid Great Britain or NI photocard driving licence.
- A valid UK / EEA passport, along with a recent utility bill (but not your mobile phone bill), bank or building society statement, credit or debit card statement, or council tax demand bill. Please note that bills should be no more than 3 months old.
These requirements help ensure compliance with the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, which regulates the buying and selling of scrap metal in the UK.
If you have any questions about the documentation required, feel free to contact us before visiting the yard, and we’ll be happy to guide you through the process.
Can I sell scrap metal without a licence? (and this one)
Yes, you can sell scrap metal without a licence as an individual. You don’t need a licence to sell your own scrap metal to a licensed scrap yard. However, scrap dealers and businesses that buy or collect scrap metal are required to have a licence under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013.
As a seller, you’ll need to provide valid identification to comply with UK law. Accepted forms of ID include:
- A valid Great Britain or NI photocard driving licence.
- A valid UK / EEA passport, along with a recent utility bill (but not your mobile phone bill), bank or building society statement, credit or debit card statement, or council tax demand bill. Please note that bills should be no more than 3 months old.
This verification helps prevent the sale of stolen metal and ensures compliance with UK regulations.
What types of vehicles or containers can I use to bring scrap to your yard?
You can bring your scrap metal to the Ace scrap yard in almost any type of vehicle or container, depending on the amount and size of the scrap you have. Common methods include:
- Cars, vans, or trailers for smaller loads or household scrap.
- Lorries or larger commercial vehicles for bulk or industrial scrap.
- Skips: We also offer skip services if you have a large quantity of scrap. We can deliver the skip to your location, and once filled, we’ll collect it and pay you for the metal inside.
- Bins or bags: For smaller items, you can use strong containers such as bins or bags to transport your scrap metal.
If you’re unsure whether your vehicle or container is suitable, feel free to give us a call, and we’ll advise on the best way to transport your scrap to our scrapyard.
Do you recycle electronics or e-waste?
Yes, we do accept certain types of electronics, also known as “e-waste”, but there are some restrictions. We typically accept items that contain valuable metals, such as:
- Old computers, laptops, and servers.
- Cables and wiring.
- Mobile phones and tablets
- Hard drives, circuit boards, and other electronic components.
However, we may not accept household electronics like TVs or fridges due to environmental regulations regarding hazardous materials like refrigerants and mercury. If you’re unsure whether we can recycle your electronics, please contact us with the details of the items, and we’ll be happy to advise you.
For larger quantities of e-waste, particularly from businesses or industrial sources, we can also arrange collection or provide skips, depending on the volume.
Do you offer special rates for large quantities?
Yes, we do offer special rates for large quantities of scrap metal. If you have a significant amount of metal to sell, we may be able to provide you with a higher rate per tonne or kilogram, depending on the type and quality of the metal.
Factors that can influence the rate include:
- The type of metal (non-ferrous metals like copper or aluminium tend to fetch higher prices).
- The purity and condition of the scrap (clean and sorted metal is valued more highly).
- Current market prices for metals.
If you’re planning to bring in a large load to our scrap yard or have regular scrap metal to sell, please contact us directly to discuss pricing. We’ll happily provide tailored quotes for larger volumes.
How do you weigh and price the scrap metal? (needs checking too)
We use certified and calibrated scales, including a weighbridge, to ensure accurate weighing of your scrap metal. The process typically works as follows:
- Weighing: For larger loads, we use our weighbridge to weigh your vehicle both before and after unloading, so we can calculate the exact weight of the scrap metal. For smaller loads, we may use smaller scales to weigh sorted metals individually.
- Pricing: The price is determined based on the type of metal, its quality, and the current market rates. Non-ferrous metals (such as copper and aluminium) are typically priced higher than ferrous metals (like steel or iron).
Once the metal is weighed and evaluated, we’ll provide you with the total price based on the current rates. Our team ensures transparency in the weighing and pricing process, so you can be confident that you’re getting a fair deal.
If you have any questions about the process or pricing, don’t hesitate to ask when you visit, or contact us for more information.
What happens to my scrap metal after you buy it?
Once we buy your scrap metal, it goes through several stages of processing at our scrap yard to ensure it’s properly recycled:
- Sorting and cleaning: The metal is sorted by type (ferrous and non-ferrous) and cleaned if necessary. Contaminants such as plastic, rubber, or other materials are removed to ensure the metal is ready for recycling.
- Shredding and crushing: Larger pieces of scrap metal are often shredded or crushed to reduce their size and make them easier to transport and process.
- Recycling: The processed metal is then sent to recycling plants, where it’s melted down and repurposed. This metal can be used to manufacture new products, from car parts and appliances to building materials and packaging.
Recycling scrap metal is not only environmentally friendly, but it also reduces the need for raw materials, saving energy and reducing emissions. Your scrap metal could eventually be part of a new product, keeping valuable resources in circulation.
Can I get paid in cash?
No, due to UK laws under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, we’re not allowed to pay for scrap metal in cash. All payments must be made electronically or via cheque to ensure compliance with the law.
We offer a range of payment options, including bank transfers and cheques, ensuring quick and secure payment for your scrap metal. If you have any specific preferences, please let us know when selling your scrap, and we’ll make the necessary arrangements.

What payment methods do you offer?
We comply with UK law, which prohibits cash payments for scrap metal. As a result, we offer the following payment methods:
- Bank transfer: This is the most common and secure method, with payments made directly into your bank account. Bank transfers are typically processed quickly, so you’ll receive your payment promptly.
- Cheque: If you prefer, we can issue a cheque, which you can deposit at your bank. While this may take slightly longer to process, it’s a reliable alternative to electronic payments.
If you have a preference for one of these payment methods, let us know when you bring in your scrap metal, and we’ll arrange it for you. All payments are handled securely and transparently to ensure you’re paid fairly for your scrap.
How do I prepare my scrap metal to get the best price?
To maximise the value of your scrap metal, here are a few tips on how to prepare it before bringing it to the yard:
- Sort your metals: Separate different types of metals (e.g., copper, aluminium, steel) as much as possible. Clean, sorted metals generally receive higher prices.
- Remove non-metal materials: Try to remove any plastic, rubber, or wood attached to the metal. Contaminated or mixed materials usually fetch a lower price since additional processing is needed.
- Clean the metal: While it’s not required, clean metal that is free from excessive rust, paint, or dirt will often be valued higher.
- Cut large items: If possible, cut down larger items to more manageable sizes. This makes it easier to transport and weigh, and you may get a better price if you’ve already processed your scrap prior to bringing it to us.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure that your scrap is in the best condition to receive the highest possible price. If you have any questions about how to prepare your scrap metal, feel free to contact us.
What’s the difference between scrap metal and waste metal?
The main difference between scrap metal and waste metal is that scrap metal has value and can be recycled, while waste metal is often discarded because it’s no longer useful or recyclable in its current form.
- Scrap metal: This refers to metal that can still be recycled or repurposed, such as old appliances, car parts, or industrial metal. It retains value and can be sold to scrap yards for recycling.
- Waste metal: Waste metal typically refers to metal that is no longer recyclable or has been contaminated with other materials to the point where it can’t be processed. In many cases, this metal may end up in landfills or require special disposal methods.
At our scrap yard, we focus on buying scrap metal that can be recycled and turned into new products, helping to reduce waste and support the circular economy. If you’re unsure whether your metal is scrap or waste, feel free to contact us for guidance.
Can I sell old appliances or machinery as scrap metal?
Yes, you can sell old appliances or machinery as scrap metal, provided they contain significant amounts of metal. Common examples include washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, and industrial machinery. These items typically contain valuable metals like steel, aluminium, and copper, which can be recycled.
However, it’s important to note that certain appliances, like fridges or freezers, may need to be de-gassed to remove refrigerants before they can be accepted. If you’re unsure whether your appliance or machinery can be sold as scrap, feel free to contact us with details, and we’ll let you know if we can accept it and if any preparation is required.
Recycling your old appliances or machinery is a great way to earn some extra money while also reducing waste and supporting the environment.
What are the environmental benefits of recycling scrap metal?
Recycling scrap metal offers several important environmental benefits, including:
- Conservation of natural resources: Recycling metal reduces the need for mining and extracting new raw materials, helping to preserve natural resources like iron ore, copper, and bauxite.
- Energy savings: Recycling metal uses significantly less energy than producing new metal from raw materials. For example, recycling aluminium saves up to 95% of the energy required to produce it from bauxite.
- Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions: By using less energy, recycling metal also helps to reduce the carbon emissions associated with metal production, contributing to a lower overall environmental impact.
- Less landfill waste: Recycling scrap metal keeps it out of landfills, reducing the amount of waste that takes up space and may lead to environmental contamination.
By recycling your scrap metal, you’re helping to conserve resources, save energy, and protect the environment. Every piece of metal that gets recycled can be repurposed into new products, reducing the demand for new raw materials.
Do you provide bins or skips for larger scrap collections?
Yes, we provide bins and skips for larger scrap collections. This service is ideal for businesses, construction sites, and individuals with a significant amount of scrap metal to dispose of. We can deliver the skip to your location, and once it’s full, we’ll collect it and pay you for the metal inside.
We offer a range of skip sizes to suit your needs, and the type and amount of metal collected will determine the final payment. This is a convenient solution for large projects or regular scrap disposal needs.
If you’d like more information or need to arrange a skip for your scrap, feel free to contact us, and we’ll be happy to help.
How often do scrap metal prices change?
Scrap metal prices can fluctuate frequently, sometimes even on a daily basis. The prices are influenced by a variety of factors, including global supply and demand, market trends, and the cost of raw materials.
Because the metal market is dynamic, we recommend checking with us regularly to get the most up-to-date prices. You can contact us directly or visit our yard to get an accurate valuation based on the current rates.
We’re always happy to provide a quote and keep you informed about any significant changes in scrap metal prices.

Do you accept non-trade customers for scrap metal sales?
Yes, we accept both trade and non-trade customers for scrap metal sales. Whether you’re an individual clearing out your home or a business looking to dispose of scrap metal, we’re happy to help.
Non-trade customers are welcome to bring household items such as old appliances, metal furniture, or car parts. We’ll assess the metal and offer a fair price based on the current market value.
If you’re unsure whether your scrap qualifies or have any questions, feel free to contact us, and we’ll guide you through the process.
What's the difference between copper pipes and copper wires in terms of pricing?
The price of copper pipes and copper cables and wires can vary based on factors like cleanliness, purity, and the current market rates for copper. Here are some key differences:
- Copper pipes: Clean copper pipes (those free from solder, paint, or other contaminants) generally fetch a higher price than dirty or mixed pipes. If the pipes contain insulation or other materials, the price may be lower due to the extra processing required.
- Copper wires: The value of copper wire depends largely on whether it is stripped or insulated. Stripped wire, which contains pure copper, commands a higher price compared to insulated wire, which needs additional work to remove the plastic coating.
Both types of copper are valuable, but to get the best price, it’s a good idea to bring clean, stripped copper if possible. If you’re unsure about the condition of your copper, feel free to bring it to us, and we’ll give you a fair quote based on the current rates.
How do you ensure accurate weighing and pricing of scrap metal?
We ensure accurate weighing and pricing of your scrap metal by using certified, calibrated scales and a weighbridge for larger loads. Our equipment is regularly inspected to ensure it meets industry standards, providing precise measurements for your scrap metal.
Here’s how we maintain transparency in the process:
- Weighing: Your scrap is weighed using our certified scales or weighbridge, depending on the size of the load. For larger vehicle loads, we weigh the vehicle before and after unloading to calculate the exact weight of the metal.
- Pricing: Once weighed, we offer a price based on the current market rates for the type of metal you bring. We provide up-to-date pricing information to ensure you receive a fair and competitive rate.
If you have any questions during the weighing or pricing process, our team is happy to explain how we determine the value of your scrap, ensuring complete transparency and fairness.
