Fascinating Greenwich Facts
Oozing maritime and naval history due to its strategical location on the banks of the River Thames, Greenwich in South East London is first mentioned in an old Saxon charter as ‘Gronewic’. This name changed several times over the following years, most notably as Grenviz in the Domesday Book (1086). Greenwich essentially means ‘green settlement’. Prior to this, there is evidence of Bronze Age activity and of course, copious Roman activity due to it being en route from Dover to London.
Greenwich has a strong royal connection, with Henry VII and Elizabeth I both being born there. Nowadays Greenwich is perhaps most famous for being the home of ‘Greenwich Mean Time’ (GMT) and the lesser-known ‘Coordinated Universal Time’ (UTC), which is effectively Ground Zero for world clocks.
Greenwich also has strong astronomical connections, being the home of the Greenwich Royal Observatory, which also houses an atomic clock at the Meridian Line. In fact, Greenwich has such a rich history that, in 1997, it’s was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its stunning architecture and illustrious heritage.
Amongst other things, tourists who visit Greenwich also flock to see the Cutty Sark, a tea clipper that was built in Scotland in 1869. In her heyday, the ship’s sleek design made her the fastest clipper in the world and she held the record for the quickest voyage from England to Australia for 10 years, after being commissioned to transport shipments of wool to the UK. Unfortunately, due to the opening of the Suez Canal and the growing popularity of steam power, her days were numbered and the Cutty Sark finally ended her commercial career in 1922, when she was bought by Wilfred Dowman, a retired sea captain, who used her as a training ship in Cornwall. By 1954, the Cutty Sark could serve no useful purpose and ended up in dry dock in Greenwich, where visitors can climb on board and soak up the sights and smells of a genuine piece of maritime history.
