As we edge closer to Halloween, we thought we’d bring you another eerie local legend from the roads of Kent. Our last ghost story about The A3 Ghost proved so popular that we couldn’t resist finding another one to share. And this time, we’re keeping it closer to home with one of Kent’s most talked about supernatural tales – The Blue Bell Hill ghost..

Just a short drive from our yard, Blue Bell Hill near Maidstone has long been known for something more than just steep hills and busy traffic. For decades, drivers along the A229 have reported seeing a ghostly hitchhiker appearing suddenly in front of their cars, sometimes vanishing on impact, sometimes reappearing in the rear view mirror moments later.

The tragedy that started it all

The story begins on 19 November 1965, when three young women were involved in a fatal crash on the A229 near Blue Bell Hill. The women, Suzanne Browne, Judith Lingham and Patricia Ferguson, were travelling home from Suzanne’s hen night in Rochester when their Ford Cortina collided with a Jaguar coming the other way. You can read the full account in Kent Online’s feature on the tragedy.

Since that tragic night, countless motorists have described chilling encounters with a young woman in white, asking for a lift or stepping into the road before disappearing without a trace. Reports have appeared in Haunted Rooms UK and even from the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena, all adding to the mystery that still surrounds the A229 today.

Kent’s most famous haunted road

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there’s no denying Blue Bell Hill has earned its place as one of Kent’s most legendary roads. Local police have even investigated incidents where shaken drivers insisted they’d hit someone, only to find no one there.

It’s a reminder of how much history and folklore runs through Kent’s roads. From Chatham to Maidstone, these routes carry not only vehicles but the echoes of stories that have become part of local culture.

Why we love these local legends

At Ace Car Breakers, we’ve spent decades working with vehicles that have their own stories, though thankfully none quite as mysterious as this one. We like to think of these tales as part of what makes Kent special, a mix of industry, community and local folklore all sharing the same roads.

While we can’t promise you’ll see any ghosts on your next visit to Ace, we can promise

Fair prices for your scrap or salvage car
Same day payment and fast collection
A responsible recycling process that meets all Environment Agency standards

It’s all part of the Ace way, keeping things above board, local and done right.
